Volunteering is a win-win for all involved, usually presents a fun challenge and hopefully makes an impact on the greater good.  Mid-last year, I offered to set-up and run the Google Ads account pro bono for Turtle Island Restoration Network (TIRN).  It’s a worthy cause as they have been a leading advocate for marine life and our oceans for over 30 years.  The Turtle Island Restoration Network, SeaTurtles.org, was awarded a Google Grant which provides them with up to $10,000 per month in-kind advertising on Google Ads and I wanted to help maximize this generous award.

We began creating campaigns mainly around Sea Turtles with okay results, but the ads did not drive nearly as much traffic as I had hoped.  TIRN does an amazing job advocating for Sea Turtles, but they also do so much more.  TIRN helps protect Sea Turtles, Salmon, Sharks, Whales and other marine life, as well as, Redwood trees.  They defend marine habitats, run research expeditions, fight climate change, and crusade against plastic addition.  I looked at the diverse areas they impact, then created and tested Google Ad campaigns to target their various programs.  The Fighting Climate Change ad below blew away all of the others.

Fighting Climate Change Google Ad

The Fighting Climate Change ad received 5X traffic of the other ads combined, at a CPC of less than 25% of the others.  At this point it is still too early to determine the full impact, but the initial results look strong.  Working pro bono with TIRN has been both fun and rewarding.  I found TIRN through Catchafire.org.  If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, take a couple minutes to search Catchafire.org; you will enjoy the challenge and help a good cause at the same time.
